Help for men in crisis 28.08.11

by Catriona Doherty, Inishowen Independent

MEN in Inishowen often try to “bottle up” their problems and are reluctant so seek help from family and friends. That’s according to Dominick Gallagher from the Inishowen Men’s Helpline team. Dominick deals with local men who have a variety of problems including financial worries, abusive relationships, addictions, depression and sexual identity concerns. The Inishowen Men’s Helpline assists men in finding solutions to their problems. “We operate a safe and confidential helpline for men to talk through any problem that is bothering them. We can also provide the caller with the contact details for the right agencies who can help them,” he said. A new service has just been set up where men can avail of face-to-face counselling sessions. It is run by a fully qualified counsellor and is free of charge. The counselling service can be accessed by self-referral, through GPs or other health professionals. The North West Men’s Helpline is supported by Action Inishowen. It operates from 9.30am to 10.30pm seven days a week. It is a free service and the number is 074 9329300.
