"Escalating" breast cancer list at Letterkenny 14.03.17

EXTRA clinics are to be provided to tackle the "escalating" waiting lists to see Donegal's breast cancer surgeon, a local campaign group has said.
Co-Operating for Cancer Care North West (CCCNW) made the announcement after a "constructive meeting" in Dublin yesterday with Minister of Health Simon Harris and representatives from the Department of Health and National Cancer Control Programme, (NCCP). The group, accompanied by Senator Pádraig MacLochlainn, also said that the Minister and health chiefs acknowledged that a second breast cancer surgeon in Donegal was required.

CCCNW said Mr Harris and NCCP director Jermone Coffey "fully acknowledged the sterling work of the Breast Team at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH)".
"They also acknowledged that a sustained solution to the difficulties experienced by LUH would be the appointment of a second breast surgeon based in LUH, they have committed to resolving this issue," said a CCCNW spokesperson.
The group along with Donegal Action for Cancer Care (DACC) say they are "cautiously optimistic" that Minister Harris and the NCCP will actively engage with Saolta and the HSE to finally resolve the difficulties experienced by breast services in LUH and the patients it serves.
A further meeting to include CCC(NW); Donegal Action for Cancer Care; the NCCP; Saolta and Donegal Oireachtas members is be held in the next couple of weeks at Letterkenny University Hospital. A follow-up meeting involving all stakeholders will be re-convened in July or August to evaluate progress made.
