RTÉ's 'The Unreal' filmed in Inishowen 27.10.26

THE wild landscapes of Inishowen take centre stage this Halloween as award-winning children’s drama The Unreal returns to RTÉ One and RTÉ Player for a third series, filmed entirely on location across the peninsula.

The Unreal Series 3 is a new adventure steeped in Irish mythology, mystery and folk horror. Inishowen has been transformed into Inishscéal, a remote island that seems frozen in another time.

Filming took place across the peninsula in July and August, at locations including Malin Head, Five Finger Strand, Culdaff, Bunagee Pier and Lisnagra Woods.
The series sees a local cast and community on screen, including Donegal native Frankie McCafferty (Blue Lights, In the Name of the Father), who joins the cast as local poet Dáithí O’Faoláin.

Members of the Inishowen Traditional Music Orchestra, the Moville Mummers and the Carndonagh Community School Drama Group also all appear in the world of Inishscéal.

Director Bonnie Dempsey says: “We wanted Irish children to see somewhere genuinely epic on screen, somewhere wild, cinematic and completely rooted in Ireland. Inishowen gave us the scale and atmosphere to create Inishscéal, a magical land at the very edge of Ireland."
The story:

At the heart of The Unreal lies one strange secret: the Kelly family aren’t supposed to be real. They’re characters who escaped from a long-forgotten 1980s TV sitcom into the real world, and they’ve been trying to blend in ever since.

Then an anonymous postcard lands in Kevin’s locker. Its sender knows exactly who, and what, the Kellys are. The hunt for answers leads the family to Inishscéal, where they come face to face with strange islanders, mummers and the legendary Morrigan.

The Unreal Series 3 premiered on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player last Sunday, 25th October.
