Gorse fires rage in Inishowen 23.03.10

GORSE fires raged across Inishowen at the weekend threatening homes, killing wildlife and destroying natural habitats.
Firefighters battled blazes on Sliabh Sneacht mountain between Buncrana and Carndonagh while a gorse fire at Kinnego Hill, near the Illies, Buncrana, led to concerns for some dwellings in its path.
The Inishowen fires were among 16 reported across the county over the weekend with a number also taking place in the west including Dungloe.
The gorse blaze at Kinnego Hill including the Fallask area, was among the worst, said Donegal chief fire officer Bobby McMenamin.

He said three fire tenders had to be deployed on Sunday evening to the Kinnego Hill area to get the fires under control and protect homes in its path.
"We had to try and protect the houses as the fire came down the hill," said Mr McMenamin.
The chief fire officer said it was possible some of the weekend fires may have been started deliberately while others were likely accidental.
He warned that the dry, sunny and breezy conditions in recent days were conducive to the spread of fire and he urged people not to light fires in the countryside.
