Carn beat wasteful Urris 10.09.10
ACL Division 3

Carn...0-9

Urris...0-3

Report: Inishowen Independent

Carndonagh had six points to spare over neighbours Urris in this Division 3 relegation battle last Saturday night. Urris had more possession over the hour but squandered chance after scoring chance, while Carn were more economical in front of the posts.
Neither side were at full strength, but Gerard Doherty and Fergal Matthews had Carn two clear before Urris got off the mark when Liam Diver rose to punch a long Martin Kelly ball over the bar in the ninth minute.
Remarkably, Urris wouldn’t score again until midway through the second half. On top of eight first half wides, they hit a further six in the first ten minutes of the second half and a whopping 19 over the hour. A truly lamentable shooting display; in contrast, Carn hit just three wides, all of them coming in the last quarter.

While they were living off limited possession, Carn’s radar was working better and Garvan McGrenra, Richie Cunningham and Kevin Doherty all pointed to give the home side a 0-5 to 0-1 half time lead.
Carn midfielder Gerard Doherty was replaced by Eanna Newton at half time after suffering a bizarre injury just before the break when brother and midfield partner Cathal accidentally blasted a free kick straight at him, striking him on the side of his head.
Mark Canny was hugely impressive at centre back for Carn, breaking up Urris attacks and rarely misplacing a pass once he’d won the ball. For Urris, Mickey Grant and Alan Friel tried hard throughout, but the team missed too many chances to ever really drag themselves into contention.
Garvan McGrenra converted a 35m free in the early stages of the second half before Paddy Nelson heroically saved on the line after Liam Diver had made a long bursting 40m run and shot for goal. A goal at that stage might have lifted Urris, but the save boosted Carn and Stephen Doherty pointed from the right wing soon after.
Alan Friel converted a handy free on 45 minutes and weaved through the defence moments later to reduce the deficit to four points, but Fergal Matthews put paid to any comeback with two fine points in the five minutes before the end.
Carn’s need for league points was greater on Saturday night and it showed in their play. The win sees Carn leapfrog Urris in the league table, although the latter have two games in hand.
But neither side are clear of the relegation stakes just yet.
