BUNCRANA maintained their unbeaten start to the Inishowen league with a comfortable 3-10 to 3-4 victory over Burt on Friday night. A fine first half performance, adorned by well-taken goals from Paddy McMyler and Mark McGonagle, saw them lead by eight points at the break and set them on the road to victory.
Burt showed flashes of good football and played with good spirit throughout and were rewarded with two late goals. Had they taken some of the chances that came their way earlier in the game, those late goals might have had a real bearing on the result.
Squally rain showers and strong winds made for very difficult playing conditions and both teams took some time to settle down. Referee Sean McLaughlin laid down the law early on issuing a couple of yellow cards and ten minutes had elapsed before Seanan Murphy opened the scoring with a point after taking a pass from Paddy McMyler.
Kevin Treacy added a point before McMyler struck for the first of his two goals in the 13th minute. Dara Tinney had won a kick-out and fed McMyler who finished high to the left of Aaron Grant in the Burt goal.
Burt’s response was immediate, with Kelvin Lynch showing good strength on the ball to get away from Michael Cuffe and hit his side’s first point. They followed up immediately with another point through Ronan McDermott, but despite fine play by the likes of Paul McHugh and Dara Grant, they failed to score for the remainder of the half.
Buncrana’s second goal came in the 17th minute when, after good build up play between Kevin Treacy and Ronan Walsh, the unmarked Mark McGonagle collected a pass and smashed to the net from close range.
Captain Martin Doherty added a point just before half time
to make it 2-4 to 0-2 to Buncrana at the break, while Burt hit three late wides from good positions.
Burt gave themselves a lifeline five minutes into the second half when Kelvin Lynch got on the end of a long ball into the square and gave Ruairí Kelly no chance smashing the ball to the back of the net.
But Buncrana’s response was clinical as they reeled off three points, two Paddy McMyler frees on either side of a Martin Doherty point from play.
Two super saves at either end kept the score down, before Kelvin Lynch brought Burt back to within six points with a fine point on the turn midway through the half.
Michael Gallagher picked up a second yellow card soon after as Buncrana were reduced to 14 men, but it made little difference as Burt continued to squander chances that came their way.
Buncrana put the result beyond doubt six minutes before the end when the impressive Paddy McMyler punched a Seanan Murphy 45 to the net and when Kevin Treacy followed up with a point from play, Buncrana led by 3-10 to 1-3.
But Burt got the last three scores of the game. First, Paul McHugh took a quick free 25m from goal that keeper Ruairí Kelly did well to turn over the bar. Then, Dara Grant slipped a pass through to substitute Gareth Barr who smashed a good finish to the net two minutes from full-time and the last word fell to Kelvin Lynch who netted at the near post after another clever pass from Dara Grant had put him through one-on-one with the Buncrana keeper.
But it was a case of too little too late for Burt and with both the other games in the league postponed owing to bad weather, Buncrana now sit on top of league with three wins from three games while Burt remain rooted to the bottom.
Buncrana’s next match is away to Naomh Pádraig tomorrow night while Burt host Carn.
