Q.  What are the charges for public hospitals in 2008?

25.02.08

The charge for attending the out-patient, accident / emergency, or casualty department of a public hospital has increased from €60 to €66 for 2008.
If you are a medical card holder or have a letter of referral from your doctor you do not have to pay this charge. If you have to return for further visits in relation to the same illness or accident, you do not have to pay the charge again for the subsequent visits.

The charge for in-patient services in a public ward has also increased to €66 a day (subject to a maximum of €660, or ten days, in a year).
Everyone is entitled to public in-patient services regardless of their income but subject to the charges mentioned above. There are a number of groups who do not have to pay the charges such as medical card holders, women receiving maternity services, children up to the age of six weeks and children suffering from prescribed long-term illnesses. The charges for private and semi-private accommodation in public hospitals have also increased by 10%. These charges are in addition to the public hospital statutory in-patient charge given above.
