Q. I am planning to go travelling for a few months on a
trip including countries in different parts of the world. What
precautions should I take and what assistance can I get from
embassies overseas?
30.06.08
The Travel Advice section of the Department of Foreign Affairs
website, www.dfa.ie , can advise you
of the precautions you may need to take and risks you should be
aware of for the particular countries you are visiting. The contact
details for Irish embassies overseas are also listed.
The website has a Travel Registration facility for Irish citizens
travelling or living abroad. This is particularly useful if you are
travelling to remote destinations or areas where you may be at risk.
When you register online, your details will be passed to the Irish
embassy or consulate nearest your destinations and will only be used
for the purposes of contacting you if necessary or if requested by
your immediate family, or in case of an emergency such as a natural
disaster, civil unrest or a family crisis.
If you are in a country where there is no Irish embassy or
consulate, you can contact the embassy of any other European Union (EU)
country for assistance which will treat you the same as it would
treat one of its own citizens. The embassy can also act as the
channel of communication with the Irish authorities where this is
required.
