Young Inishowen
people are being forced to "pack their bags"' to get
work, according to Senator Joe McHugh.
The Fine Gael general election candidate said the
county was suffering a 'brain drain' with young
highly-educated people still having to travel to
Dublin, Belfast and London, for high tech, high end
jobs.
"It really is time to stimulate the North West with
investment in research and development," he said.
"There should be more innovative programmes
developed in conjunction with the University of
Ulster's Magee Campus and Letterkenny's Institute of
Technology."
He said Donegal's brightest and best were leaving
the county in search.
"With the establishment of the new Northern Ireland
Assembly this week, we now have the opportunity -
something we really didn't have before - for real
cross-border co-operation for the betterment of all
our people.
"Donegal has been a Cinderella county for too long,
too far from Dublin to be treated like it really was
part of the Republic.
"That has got to change. We need sustainable
projects here, projects that will allow our
brightest and best to remain at home and make a real
contribution to the place they were born and raised.
"This brain drain must stop now. The young people
leaving from Letterkenny bus station on Sunday
evenings or from Carndonagh in the early hours of
Monday morning should have the opportunities to stay
and work at home. "If elected, I'll be working round
the clock to ensure that we create real jobs here."
