Fianna Fail election
candidate for Donegal North East Cecilia Keaveney is
calling on Donegal County Council to take urgent
measures to address safety at Buncrana's Westbrook
and Cockhill bridges.
"The Westbrook and Cockhill Bridges need urgent
attention
to allow a safer and speedier exit onto the main
Cockhill to Buncrana
Road.
"A significant number of vehicles use these bridges
on a daily basis and with traffic building up both
from the Carndonagh/Ballyliffin direction, the
Buncrana and Cockhill directions and the Slavery/Dunree
direction, motorists can end up taking chances
through sheer frustration.
"I want to ensure that not only are undue delays
reduced but more
importantly safety hazards are eliminated."
The Cockhill bridge provides an integral link
between North and South
Inishowen, said Keaveney.
"I am calling on Donegal County Council to provide
an interim measure for pedestrians on the Cockhill
Bridge in particular," she said.
"I along with my Fianna Fail council colleagues in
Buncrana both Urban and County have requested a
meeting with the roads engineer and the planner to
discuss options to make these bridges and junctions
safer for motorists and pedestrians alike.
"I'm aware that Buncrana Urban Council and Donegal
County Council are trying to secure funding through
various methods including the Development
Contribution Scheme for multiple developments.
However, the costs are such for both these projects
that EU co-finance monies are required from the
Department of Environment, Heritage & Local
Government.
"I pledge to fight for extra funding to enable these
projects to be progressed if I am re-elected as the
TD for Inishowen."
