Fine Gael Senator,
Joe McHugh, has criticised the HSE's decision to
dock the pay of protesting nurses.
He said he believed it will only make a 'bad
situation worse'.
"Fine Gael believes that nurses are committed to
delivering patient care and willing to be flexible
on work practices. It is also clear that allowing
this dispute to carry on is putting increased
pressure on our already overstretched health service
allowing patient care to be compromised.
"The decision by the HSE to dock the pay of
protesting nurses, as pointed out by the Fine Gael
Leader Enda Kenny, is unlikely to move this conflict
forward positively.
"Fine Gael, in Government, would reform the
benchmarking process so that nurses could have
restored confidence in it and we believe that there
is scope to negotiate on phasing in a 35-hour week."
He added: "I strongly urge both sides to return to
further talks and to seek to resolve this dispute as
quickly as possible."
