Older people in
Donegal and those availing of the telephone
allowance can now receive a monthly cash payment of
€24 to buy mobile phone credit, Fianna Fáil election
candidate Niall Blaney has confirmed.
Currently, 13,957 Donegal people receive the
Telephone Allowance Scheme which previously only
applied to landline bills.
“The extension of this scheme this week is a
necessary step, especially for older people, who
have often found the cost of a landline
prohibitive," said Mr. Blaney.
"A mobile phone is often a better option because
they can be more affordable and practical in terms
of personal security."
The total monthly mobile phone allowance is €24.70.
He added: “The decision to include mobile phones
highlights Fianna Fáil’s commitment to keep ahead of
technological and social advances. I believe it is
only right to give people the option of having their
mobiles paid for instead of their landlines.
“I am confident that this measure will prove to be
an important addition to the Household Benefits
Schemes package and hope that those availing of the
Telephone Allowance Scheme take advantage of it."
