Fine Gael's pledge
to provide free GP care for under-5s and free health
insurance for under-16s will transform the health
service for the family, the party's local election
candidate Senator Joe McHugh has said.
He said the new proposals would be of particular
help to parents with young children.
"The introduction of free health insurance for all
children under 16 - the age at which they move into
adult services - will provide secondary care and
guaranteed treatment times, quality and levels of
services.
"In addition, they will have access to GP care and a
health check/screening appointment as they enter
primary school and secondary school," he said.
He said Fine Gael's health strategy would benefit
all families, and pre-school children would have
health screening - not currently provided for by the
GMS scheme.
"Children and young people are our investment in
Donegal's future. Facilitating their good health is
a vital part of that investment.
"How we, as a country, nurture our children through
their childhood and into adult life directly impacts
on the future health of our nation and on its
prosperity and stability.
"Fine Gael's imaginative proposals, together with
medical cards for 100,000 more families, free GP
services for the under 5s and comprehensive and
community-based mental health services, underline
the party's commitment to building an effective and
comprehensive health service for all our children
and adolescents."
