Thousands of
Inishowen people go to the polls today to choose who
they want to represent them for the next four years
in the 30th Dail.
Election day has turned into a free day for hundreds
of local schoolchildren with many national schools
becoming polling stations for the day.
The candidates running for election in Donegal North
East undoubtedly had a restless night's sleep as
canvassing continued up to the wire.
Today, their fates are in the hands of the local
electorate.
Voters in Inishowen and the rest of Donegal North
East will be asked to choose, in their order of
preference, from eleven candidates: Joe McHugh, Fine
Gael; Cecilia Keaveney Fianna Fail; Padraig
MacLochlainn Sinn Fein; Jimmy Harte, Independent;
Frank Gallagher, Green Party; Mary Doherty,
Christian Solidarity Party; Arthur McGuinness,
Independent; Niall Blaney, Fianna Fail, Dr. Jim
McDaid, Fianna Fail; Siobhan McLaughlin, Labour
Party; Ian McGarvey, Independent.
Most would say that it was a lack lustre campaign in
the early days, although things hotted up as
canvassing days began to run out.
The press releases came thick and fast especially
from the bigger parties with health unsurpisingly
among the main election footballs.
Whether you think the FF/PD coalition has served you
well, or you believe Ireland is in need of a change,
the choice is yours.
