ISPCA welcomes Inishowen conviction 31.07.07

THE Irish Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) has welcomed a six month jail sentence for a Lisfannon farmer who abandoned a horse that was found dying in a quarry.
Joseph Glackin of Lisfannon, Fahan, was found guilty of the offence last week and was also banned for life from keeping animals.
ISPCA Inspector for Donegal, Kevin McGinley told InishowenNews.com:
“We are extremely pleased with the outcome of this case and believe that the sentence imposed serves to highlight how serious an offence animal cruelty is considered in this day and age."
The conviction relates to a complaint made to the ISPCA National Animal Helpline by a concerned member of the public on June 21st, last year. Local Gardai proceeded to the scene, a quarry in Burnfoot, where they discovered a grey mare in an emaciated condition with no access to food or water and with lice crawling on her coat.
The animal was in such a serious condition, Gardai and the ISPCA immediately called on the assistance of the Irish Horse Welfare Trust to have the animal removed to a place of safety. The mare’s condition has continued to improve since being taken into care more than a year ago.
The organisation yesterday appealed for help in eradicating the ill-treatment of animals.
If you suspect that a creature is being subjected to cruelty, please contact the ISPCA Animal Cruelty Helpline on 1890 515 515 or visit their website for more information on www.ispca.ie .
