Keaveney welcomes more law
apprenticeships

Fail election candidate Cecilia Keaveney has
welcomed moves that will make more solicitor
apprenticeships available.
"A number of people in the legal profession brought
this to my attention and I was only too pleased to
act on their behalf," she said.
"There is an incredible shortage of positions
available to apprentices due to the legal
requirement on solicitors to have five years
continuous practice as a solicitor before he or she
may take on an apprentice.
"Justice Minister Michael McDowell informed me that
following a proposal from the Law Society of Ireland
he has agreed to amend legislation to reduce that
time to four years.
"This would result in a higher number of solicitor
apprenticeship positions becoming available."
Ms. Keaveney said she hoped the local electorate
would return her to the Dail on May 24th "to help
ensure that this piece of legislation which is
pending can be passed".
