Buncrana protestors demand parking U-turn 14.12.07

PRESSURE is mounting on Buncrana Town Council to revisit its parking charges after more than 100 demonstrators staged a protest this week.
Residents of streets such as St. Columba's Avenue, Lower Main Street and Mill Brae, bore placards demanding "fairer" treatment, particularly for residents without cars.
'It will be lonely this Christmas, unless family park free!' "We believe that in order to get a waiver from parking charges, it shouldn't matter if a resident has a car or not," said spokesperson James Quigley.
"This is because many of our residents have no cars or vehicles but still have family, friends and helpers who come to visit. Some of us rely on our good neighbours,
family and friends to help us in our daily chores and we don't think they should be penalised for this."
The protestors said it should not matter if a resident's vehicle is registered to their address. They said many people own cars that are not registered at their address either because of renting or having returned from another part of the country or abroad.
"Many of our residents have families who come to visit periodically especially in the summer and at this festive time. These relatives have already been penalised by emigration so let's not penalise them again.

Their list of demands are: free parking for all residents; free parking for family and friends who visit; free parking for workers; free parking for carers and helpers who visit residents and consultation on the parking and non-parking areas; one-way traffic flow and an introductory period to allow residents make the necessary adjustments. Following the protest, Cllr. Joe Doherty said a case could be made for the Council to revisit the issue and examine the demonstrators' complaints.
