Donegal North East
election candidate, Cllr. Pádraig MacLochlainn, has
published Sinn Fein's ten proposals for better
all-Ireland transport.
Central to them is the provision of new road and
rail networks on an all-Ireland basis for the North
West region.
Cllr. MacLochlainn also announced that Conor Murphy,
the North's Regional Development Minister, will meet
with rail network lobbyists during a series of
engagements on all-Ireland transport needs in
Donegal this Saturday.
The ten SF proposals to improve transport provision
across the State include a plan for an extensive
expansion of an all-Ireland rail network including
an extended Western Rail Corridor serving Donegal
and Derry; a rail link to Shannon Airport and an
upgrade of the Derry-Belfast rail link; increase
funding and provision of buses in rural areas;park-and-ride
facilities, to be factored into all major housing
developments; a North West motorway serving Dublin
to Donegal and Derry and the abolition of toll
charges.
He said: "The fact is that under the current
Government's Transport 21 plan, €4.4 million is
being spent on public transport every single day in
this State, yet none of that is being spent on new
projects for Donegal.
"That is why we have asked Conor Murphy to meet
transport lobbyists in Donegal. Donegal's transport
needs should be addressed through a North West
regional approach on an all-Ireland basis."
The Sinn Fein candidate said his party would
"reverse the Government's privatisation agenda".
"A high quality public transport system and roads
network is essential both to continued economic
growth and to improve people's quality of life and
we will make it a priority in government," he said.
