Fine Gael in
Government will sack ministers who waste public
money, according to local election candidate Senator
Joe McHugh.
He made his comments as he launched the party's Five
Point Plan for Accountable Government.
"The lack of accountability in the outgoing FF/PD
Government has damaged our public services and has
damaged public faith in politics and what it can
achieve. Fianna Fáil and the PDs just set targets
for what they can spend, not what they should
achieve.
"They have a blank cheque mentality that they apply
to the whole country," he said.
"If the current Government ran a company like
they've been running the country, they'd have been
fired long ago. They'd be unemployable."
Among those on his criticism hit-list are Martin
Cullen, "Minister for E-Voting" whom he accused of
"wasted €62 million on an e-voting system that is
now gathering dust in warehouses". He described
Minister Dick Roche as the Minister for Dirty Water
saying he "failed to provide safe, clean drinking
water for the people of Galway".
He called Minister Micheál Martin, "the Minister who
didn't read his nursing home brief". And he accused
him of "standing idly by while patients suffered in
nursing homes".
Among its proposals, Fine Gael has pledged to
urgently review the Freedom of Information Act; to
reform the Dail to bring in 50% more sitting days
and shorter recesses and to introduce a clear public
record of ministerial decisions.
"It's time for accountability in government. Fine
Gael is determined, with Labour, to deliver a new
standard of accountability in ministerial office"
McHugh said.
