by Linda McGrory

THE Irish Defence Forces are seeking cracking good value this Easter as they shell out for a vast supply of fresh eggs.
Our 9,600 troops get through a whopping 840,000 eggs every year. The contract is coming up for renewal shortly and includes the monthly delivery of eggs to all 17 military bases around the country including Finner Camp, Co Donegal.
Egg suppliers are now scrambling for the lucrative two-year deal, worth an estimated €150,000 to €200,000.
"Some 70,000 eggs are delivered to the Defence Forces every month. The current tender for eggs includes the Army, Naval Service and Air Corps,” said a Defence Forces spokesperson. Current suppliers are Rockfarms Eggs, Clontibret, Co Monaghan; BWG Foods, Walkinstown, Dublin and The Nest Box Egg Company, Castleblaney, Co Monaghan. The new egg supply contract runs from July 1, 2011 until June 30, 2013. ‘Eggspressions’ of interest must be lodged by noon on May 5.
