Tributes paid to Bishop Hegarty 08.11.11

TRIBUTES have been paid to Bishop of Derry, Dr Seamus Hegarty who has announced his intention to resign due to ill health. Bishop Edward Daly thanked Dr Hegarty for his "unfailing kindness" to him.
“I was aware that he had been in indifferent health for some time,” he said.
“I am conscious of the huge and demanding burden of responsibility that a bishop has to accept. Bishop Hegarty was prudent and wise to submit his resignation if he did not feel able any longer to continue in his Episcopal responsibility," he added.
He thanked Bishop Hegarty for his ministry in the diocese over the last 17 years.
“On a personal note, I thank him for his unfailing kindness to me and constant care for me during those years,” he added.
Meanwhile, Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Ken Good, also expressed his good wishes.
"On behalf of the Church of Ireland community in Derry and Raphoe diocese we send our prayers and good wishes to Bishop Hegarty as he is shortly to begin retirement. It is obviously a matter of regret that his retirement has been necessitated by an ongoing medical condition". As Bishop Hegarty begins this new phase in his life, with its challenges, we wish him well," added Bishop Good.
