Gardaí seize 1,200 illegal fireworks 17.10.11

GARDAI have seized some 1,200 illegal fireworks following the search of a car in Inishowen. The fireworks, including 700 bangers and almost 500 assorted fireworks including rockets, were found during an operation in Moville town centre on Friday evening at 9.30pm.
Garda Dermot Hegarty, left, and Garda PJ Costello of Moville Garda Station pictured with some of the 1,200 illegal fireworks seized on Friday.
A 19 year old man and a man in his early twenties who were in the car at the time, were questioned. There were no arrests but a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. Sergeant Stephen Lynch of Moville garda station yesterday described the fireworks haul as one of the biggest recovered in the Inishowen peninsula. He said he believed the fireworks were destined for sale to young people in the run-up to Halloween.
"Apart from being illegal these fireworks are extremely dangerous and can cause serious injury to the people using them," said Sgt Lynch.
"The noise of fireworks in the run-up to Halloween can frighten the elderly, young children and pets and are a scourge on society at this time of the year," he added. In a separate, unrelated incident some 60 rockets were seized on Thursday following the search of a house in the Moville area.
