GERRY Adams TD has
extended his sympathies to the family of murdered
Buncrana councillor, Eddie Fullerton, the 20th
anniversary of whose death occurred this week.
The Sinn Féin president also supported the Fullerton
family's renewed call for an independent public
inquiry into the killing - also backed this week by
the Border Regional Authority.
Deputy Adams said: “I knew Eddie well. He was a very
popular figure and elected representative in
Buncrana. He was a dedicated republican activist who
worked tirelessly as a councillor.
“The investigation carried out by the Gardai at the
time was inadequate and Sinn Féin supports the
family’s demand an independent public inquiry into
Eddie’s murder.”
Meanwhile, the Border Regional Authority, made up of
public representatives from counties Donegal,
Leitrim, Monaghan, Cavan and Louth, met at the
County House, Lifford on Wednesday, for their
monthly meeting.
Donegal Deputy Mayor, Cllr Marie Therese Gallagher
welcomed the group's support for a full independent
investigation into the Fullerton murder.
Cllr Gallagher said:" I feel it is appropriate that
sitting here in Lifford today, in the very room that
Eddie Fullerton represented the people of Donegal,
that we renew the call for an independent inquiry to
be established to answer the many questions that
remain unanswered," she said.
“Eddie Fullerton's murder in Donegal was a shocking
incident in which agents of the British State
specifically targeted one of the most effective and
determined local councillors ever to represent Sinn
Féin and indeed this local authority.
“I welcome that members of the Border Regional
Authority support the call for truth and justice and
pledge their support for an independent inquiry.” A
commemorative stone, dug from the land surrounding
the Fullerton family homestead at Sleadran, Buncrana,
has been engraved and will be unveiled this Sunday,
May 29, at the Stone Jug, Buncrana, at 3pm. |
