GAA "legend" John picks up award 10.05.11

A "legend" in Buncrana GAA circles has been awarded an Irish News volunteer award for 2011.
Popular John Porter picked up the 'Volunteer Large Club Award 2011' at a gala reception in the Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast, on Friday.
"John is quite simply a legend within C.LG. Bun Cranncha and a true ambassador for the Club and the GAA," said a Buncrana GAA spokesperson.
"Over the past 30 years he helped facilitate the purchase of our grounds and subsequent development of a full size floodlit pitch, second floodlit training field and clubhouse facilities. He played a major role in the formation of the Club lotto and raised vast sums through club draws, race nights etc.
Buncrana GAA club man, John Porter, right, receives his award from Ulster GAA President, Aogan Farrell, at a gala ceremony in Belfast.
But John is much more than just a fundraiser.
"He cuts and lines playing fields; paints clubrooms; acts as umpire and linesman; organises supporters buses; commentates on finals; makes the tea and sandwiches; helped build the stand, trims the hedgerows; mans the gate; pumped the footballs, lodged club monies, maintained records, washed the jerseys; and much more.
"It is fair to say that over the course of over 31 years since our reformation no single individual has done more for the cause of the GAA in Buncrana than he," added the spokesperson.
"John rarely misses a club game at any level and follows Donegal to every corner, health permitting and he still sells innumerate draw and lotto tickets as well as running the weekly fundraiser. The Irish News Club Volunteer award is a fitting acknowledgment of and tribute to the immeasurable impact that John has on the Buncrana GAA Club and wider community."
