AN Inishowen woman is limbering up for the New York City Marathon to help improve the lives of patients at Letterkenny General Hospital.
Greencastle-based Siobhan Friel is a longstanding 'Friend of Letterkenny General Hospital' as well as a staff member there for the past 22 years.
She will run the marathon in the Big Apple on Sunday, November 6, along with Fiona Ferry from Milford; mother and daughter Rosaleen and Sonia McShane from Burtonport; mother and son Cathy and Declan Harvey from Letterkenny; Stephanie Dunleavy from Letterkenny; Sarah Sweeney, Letterkenny and Gemma McBrearty from Donegal Town.
Siobhan who works at the St Conal's campus, recently qualified as a counsellor with a particular interest in addiction and relationship counselling.
She says she is "passionate" about fundraising for 'The Friends' of because the charity "supports both the physical and mental health of the people of Donegal".
Funds raised through their upcoming marathon run will go towards a much-needed Angiography Suite at the hospital.
"The goal is to raise 750,000 euro towards the provision of this suite. Angiography is a special x-ray of the coronary arteries of the heart to detect coronary artery disease.
"The provision of this equipment will eliminate many patients having to travel to Dublin or Sligo for investigation or treatment.
"We currently have well over 600,000 euro in this account and expect to have reached our goal by end of year," said Siobhan.
