Stain glass designer dies 01.04.11

HELEN Moloney, the woman who designed the stained glass windows in St Aengus’ Church, Burt, has died at the age of 85.
Moloney, who was a stained glass artist, did much of her work for Derry architect Liam McCormick. Among her designs were the windows at Burt and the windows in the Star of the Sea Church, Desertegney.

The commission for the church in Desertegney was the first job carried out by Helen Moloney. In all, she completed 11 commissions for McCormick, who lived in Greencastle for most of his life.
Ms Moloney was born in County Tipperary in 1926 into a staunchly republican family. Her mother, Kathleen Barry was the sister of Kevin Barry who was hanged by the British in Dublin.
On the strength of a picture of marigolds she painted, Helen entered the National College of Art and Design just before her 14th birthday and studied there until her graduation in 1948.
Stained glass became her chosen field in 1958. In the 1960s she began carrying out various commissions for the acclaimed architect, McCormick. (Inishowen Independent)
