Clipper maritime festival planned for Greencastle 19.04.12

THE FISHING village of Greencastle is continuing preparations - including a special maritime festival - to welcome the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race this summer.
The community of the idyllic seaside village is working hard to ensure the yachts receive a warm and colourful Inishowen welcome during their visit to the area.
Greencastle is organising a weeklong festival - ‘Foyle Inishowen Clipper 2012’ from June 30 to July 7.
The Clipper Challenge is a global yacht race that started in Southampton in July 2011. Leg 8 of the race is from Nova Scotia in Canada to Derry and the competing boats will arrive between June 29 and June 30.
The Greencastle ‘Foyle Inishowen Clipper 2012’ festival is from June 30 to July 7.
In addition to the onshore activities in the village, the Foyle will host a range of offshore events including yacht races, kayaking, boat and rowing trips. Many visiting yachts from across the country and Scotland will also join the celebrations.
Inishowen Maritime & Community Clipper Project committee were thrilled at the announcement that they had been successful in their application to Inishowen Development Partnership for vital funding support from the LEADER Programme.
The project's Gemma Havlin said: “The ethos of this 'Inishowen Clipper Project’ is to create a legacy for the area by enhancing our social economy through showcasing the best we have to offer our visiting guests.
"We are delighted with how the community is working together to celebrate this once in a lifetime opportunity for our village. We have a full programme of events planned which will be finalised over the next few weeks, including family fun days, a folklore parade, hog roasts, street entertainers, lots of traditional music and local musicians in the pubs and restaurants and on the street." Two marquees will also be erected for arts, crafts and food fairs.
"The village will act as a wonderful viewing point to see the magnificent 68ft clippers sailing along the Foyle throughout the week as well as our own local, visiting and traditional boats.
The main highlight will of course be on the race start day on Saturday, July 7 but we ensure there is a real celebratory atmosphere throughout the week," added Gemma.
The Clipper Challenge arrives in the Foyle on 29th-30th June.
Anyone interested in showcasing their local trade, produce, craft or products in one of the marquees during Clipper week should visit www.foyleinishowen.com and complete the online submission form.
