Culdaff to host Donegal Fleadh

CULDAFF will play host to the Donegal Fleadh in May
this year with competitors expected from all over
the county as the Inishowen branch of Comhaltas has
been selected to play host.
The local comhaltas branch Craobh Seamus Mac Giolla
Bhride was formed in the mid-1980s by Teresa McClure
(nee Doherty) to honour Jimmy McBride, a local
fiddle player who tragically died in a car accident
when he was 22.
Jimmy McBride, like Teresa and many Inishowen
traditional musicians was a pupil of Dinny
McLaughlin. Jimmy won the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil
in 1978, 1980 and the Oireachtas also in 1980. |

Since the formation of
Craobh Seamus Mac Giolla Bhride the branch has had
many achievements with its young solo musicians and
groups going forward to represent Donegal and Ulster
at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil.
Among the many successes are Craobh Seamus Mac
Giolla Bhride Grupai Cheoil 1985, 1988 and 1989
under the direction of Teresa McClure.
Solo musicians who have been successful at the
All-Ireland include Paul, Damien and Roisin Harrigan,
Ann and Edel McLaughlin, Paul McClure, Yasmin Lynch,
Rosemary Lynch, Paula and Melanie Houton, Mairead
and Siobhan O’Connor, Eimear McColgan to name but a
few. |

Craobh Seamus Mac
Giolla Bhride has hosted the Donegal Fleadh on
several occasions in the past however this is the
first time the County Fleadh will be held in Culdaff.
May 11-13 will see many young musicians from
throughout Donegal travel to the Inishowen peninsula
to take part in the County Fleadh Cheoil
competitions which will be held in venues through
the Village. Competitors who take first or second
place at the Fleadh will go forward to represent
Donegal at the Ulster Fleadh which will be held this
year in Dungiven.
The Fleadh committee has already received great
support in the fundraising initiatives and are
looking forward to a successful Fleadh in Inishowen.
Alongside the competitions, there will be a ceilí,
sessions, and a fun day of music song and dance in
the Village over the weekend. Further details on
these events will be announced later. |
