'Schools can use new appeal system' 22.02.12

DEPUTY Joe McHugh TD has outlined a new ground for appeal whereby small schools can appeal the loss of teaching posts to the Department of Education’s Staffing Appeals Board.
He said they can do so on the basis of projected rising enrolments in the coming years that would allow them to retain posts.
He said this would be key to saving threatened teaching posts at schools in Donegal.
“The new ground for appeal announced by the Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn TD today is the key to saving threatened teaching posts at our schools. The Staffing Appeals Board will now be open to all small schools that can project rising enrolments in the coming years, which would allow the schools to retain posts.
“The Appeals Board will now assess appeals from schools that can project increased pupil numbers in the future. This was the key pledge that rural Fine Gael TDs were looking for in this debate.
Deputy Joe McHugh.
“I have met with the principal teachers of each Donegal North East school affected by these reforms and I am very much aware of the particular situation at each school. I will work with each school through the Appeals Process.”
