Moville have the last Laff in Carn 23.02.12

Report: Inishowen Independent

Moville Reserves produced the shock of the round on Sunday, defeating in-form Carn after extra-time to reach the last eight of the Buncrana Credit Union Cup.
A single Conor Lafferty strike in the 100th minute of the contest proved enough as the feisty Foylesiders upset the odds to dump one of the favourites out of the cup.
Carn may well have one eye on their forthcoming FAI Junior Cup clash against Ballymun United but last Sunday’s loss came as an unexpected blow to the Reds nevertheless.
Missing a trio of regulars, Cathal O’Kane, Michael Toland and Gerard Doherty, Carn controlled possession for long periods but failed to create enough chances to threaten Peter Burke’s goal.
In bright and wet conditions it was Carn who started on the front foot, with Shaun Doherty’s shot comfortably saved by Burke in the Moville goal.
Ten minutes into the match, Moville were dealt a blow when Christy McGeoghan was forced to come off injured.
Twenty minutes in Carn’s Cathal Doherty set-up Oliver McConnellogue, who fired too high when well placed.
Soon after Moville’s Jason McLaughlin found Conor Lafferty but his effort flew straight at Crossan in the Carn goal.
Moville’s Shaun Doherty and Carn’s Donncha Gallagher swapped wide for their teams as the game continued in cagy fashion.
Shaun Doherty, for the Glencrow men, grew into the game and was a calming influence in front of the Moville defence, intercepting pass after pass.
Moville picked up the pace in the second-half with Doherty shooting just over before Carn defender Brendan Tabb fired over Burke from distance.
Carn central defender Gerard McEleney found Donncha Gallagher to carve out a chance for Paddy McGuinness but he fired wide of the Moville goal.
McEleney and Michael Byrne then combined to create a chance for Gallagher but he shot straight at Burke.
Soon after Byrne found Ronan Doherty but the Carn striker was also narrowly off-target.
With normal time drawing to a close, Shaun Doherty arrowed a drive inches wide of Crossan’s goal before Gallagher fired to the wrong side of the post at the other end.
With the game still deadlocked, Carn began extra-time looking more threatening with Gerard McEleney heading wide.
However on the stroke of half-time in the first additional period it was Moville who hit the front.
Shaun Doherty rolled the ball into Colin Doherty and he in turn released Conor Lafferty to fire a fine low shot past Gerard Crossan from the edge of the area.
A famous win for Moville Reserves, who will now enter the draw for the quarter-finals full of confidence.
