A NUMBER of local
residents are angry that a developer of a wind farm
near Kinnagoe Bay has applied to increase the height
of the turbines "to become one of the highest in the
whole of Ireland".
Th residents who have organised themselves as the
Inishowen Wind Energy Awareness Group says the
developer has described the proposed height increase
at Crockbrack Hill as "slight".
"We don’t call increasing the height of the hub from
69 metres to 85 metres ‘slight’. That is an increase
of almost a quarter of the permitted height. It will
be the height of a five story building. It takes the
full turbine height to 132 metres. The highest
turbine is in Greystones in Wicklow at 139 metres,"
said spokesman, David Simpson.
The Inishowen Wind Energy Awareness Group said many
Inishowen residents did not see the initial planning
application nearly two years ago as it was placed in
a national newspaper.
However, the second, third and fourth advertisement
for changes to the original application were placed
in a local paper.
They said planning applications pertaining to local
areas should only appear in local papers otherwise
people are "kept in the dark".
The group has now advised people who wish to object
to the latest application that they only have until
February 14 to do so in writing to Donegal County
Council.
