€1,500 uni award for Donegal student 21.10.14

LETTERKENNY student Rosie Ní Ghairbhigh who was among 49 college freshers who each received €1,500 from NUI Galway to mark their high scores in the Leaving Certificate.
NUIG annually honours first-year students who achieve a minimum of 560 points in their Leaving Cert. The recipients received their ‘Excellence Scholarship’ at a special ceremony on Friday. They represented 29 secondary schools in twelve counties across the country.
NUI Galway president Dr Jim Browne said: "The purpose of these awards is to encourage each student to develop his or her academic potential to the fullest by setting a realistic threshold of excellence and rewarding every student who attains that level.”
Rosie attended Pobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair, Doirí Beaga and is now studying Arts at NUIG. She is pictured receiving her cheque for €1,500 from the university's deputy president, An tOllamh Pól Ó Dochartaigh.
