Greencastle Regatta
& Festival 2026
16.07.26
ONE of Ireland’s
longest-running regattas, the
Greencastle Regatta & Festival, returns this August
with a packed five-day programme celebrating the
village’s deep maritime heritage alongside a modern,
family-focused festival experience.
Taking place from Tuesday 4th August to Sunday 9th
August, the festival proudly showcases generations of
seafaring tradition. At its heart are time-honoured
activities such as punt racing and sailing, net mending
and line throwing—skills that reflect Greencastle’s rich
fishing heritage and continue to be passed down through
the community. |
A key feature of the
regatta weekend is the Punt Races and Cruiser Race,
alongside beloved traditions such as The Blessing of the
Fleet, the Johnny Cavanagh Memorial Net Mending
Competition, and the return of the Patrick McClenaghan
Memorial Line Throwing Competition, all of which
celebrate the village’s enduring connection to the sea.
Newer additions to the programme continue to broaden the
festival’s appeal, including the Emergency Services
Showcase on Friday 7th August. This engaging and
educational event will bring together emergency response
teams from across the region, offering the public a
unique opportunity to see their work up close. Families
and visitors can expect interactive displays,
demonstrations, and the chance to meet the personnel who
play a vital role in keeping the community safe—making
it a standout attraction for all ages. |

Greencastle Colour Run, in
support of Donegal Hospice, is on Saturday 8th August |
Another major highlight of
the festival is the Colour Run in aid of Donegal
Hospice, taking place on Saturday 8th August. This
vibrant and ever-growing event draws large crowds each
year, with participants taking part in a colourful,
high-energy run through the village. Combining fun,
fitness, and fundraising, the Colour Run has become one
of the defining moments of the festival, supporting a
vital local service while creating an unforgettable
experience for all involved.
The festival gets underway on Tuesday 4th August with
the Patina 02 Art Exhibition, followed by Bingo Night on
Wednesday. Thursday 6th August features a Bumper Family
Fun Day & Craft Fair, along with a popular evening Car
Treasure Hunt.
Friday’s programme builds into a full day of activity,
combining heritage events, family entertainment, and
live music, before continuing into a lively weekend.
Saturday also includes the Foyle Sailability Open
Regatta, Circus Skills workshops, a Pet Show, and the
ever-popular Duck Race, before a packed evening line-up
of live entertainment.
The festival concludes on Sunday 9th August with a final
day of community events including a Craft Fair, Fancy
Dress, Tug o’ War, and the John Anthony Barr Memorial
Walking Football Competition, followed by live
performances to bring the celebrations to a close.
A €10 cover charge will apply for evening entertainment
on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with traffic management
in place during key times.
The
Greencastle Regatta & Festival remains a cornerstone
of the Irish summer calendar - blending one of the
country’s oldest regatta traditions, including punt
sailing and racing, with a vibrant modern festival that
continues to grow year after year.
Organisers are encouraging everyone to come along,
celebrate Greencastle’s unique maritime heritage,
experience the Emergency Services Showcase, and take
part in the Colour Run in support of Donegal Hospice. |
