Carrying the Silence at Artlink Fort Dunree 06.10.26

BUNCRANA-based artist Veronica Buchanan explores loss, memory and remembrance in a new Artlink exhibition. Carrying the Silence opens in the Saldanha Gallery at 6pm on Friday 9th October and is continuing until 8th November 2026.

Veronica Buchanan studied Fine Art at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), graduating in 1979, following a Foundation in Art & Design at Regional Technical College, Letterkenny. During her studies, she exhibited in the Living Art exhibitions at the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, and subsequently showcased her work in a number of Dublin galleries.

Alongside her own practice, Veronica worked as an art educator, teaching in Dublin and Monaghan before joining Scoil Mhuire in Buncrana, where she taught from 1988 until her retirement in 2015. Since then, Veronica has developed an active studio practice, exhibiting nationally and internationally.

Veronica’s work is rooted in personal experience, relationships and memory – with her practice exploring the ways that experiences of loss, grief and trauma can remain with us long after the events themselves have passed. Rather than simply illustrating these experiences, she seeks to give physical form to what is intangible: the emotions, memories and stories that we carry within us.

Working across ceramics, textiles, drawing and painting, Veronica allows materials and processes to develop organically. An initial idea may change as the work progresses, with different stories and visual references emerging along the way.

Carrying the Silence brings together earlier and newly developed works. The exhibition occupies a space between keepsake, relic and memorial. Veronica draws on childhood, family, religious ritual and the private objects through which lives are remembered, creating works that hold a sense of both intimacy and shared experience. The body of work has no clear beginning or end, but forms part of an ongoing journey connected by a common thread.

Speaking ahead of the new solo exhibition at Artlink, Veronica Buchanan said: “Much of my work comes from the things we carry with us through life – memories, relationships, loss and experiences that can be difficult to put into words. Making and creating art allows me to give some kind of physical form to those feelings and, hopefully, creates a space where other people can bring their own memories and experiences to the work.
“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to bring Carrying the Silence together at Artlink. Fort Dunree is such a special place, and I’m really looking forward to sharing these works here and seeing the conversations and personal responses they might encourage.”
