Ship Ahoy!..It's cruise season 10.06.10

THE cruise season gets underway this week with the arrival of two of the four ships to visit Lough Foyle this year.
Passengers on board the Saga Pearl II will wake up on the lough today after spending time visiting Guernsey, Falmouth, Cobh and Dublin.
And on Sunday, the Alexander von Humbolt, named after the famous German explorer, will arrive in the locality after calling at Glengarriff, Foynes and Killybegs.
Cruise North West is a partnership between Derry City Council, Londonderry Port & Harbour Commissioners, the Loughs Agency and Derry Visitor & Convention Bureau [DVCB]. The partnership undertook a series of marketing activities this year including attendance at key cruise industry events and the publication of a new brochure.
The Silver Cloud cruise ship anchored off Greencastle in August 2009. The 2010 Lough Foyle cruise season gets underway this week.
Visitors will be treated to an authentic local experience upon arrival and will enjoy musical entertainment as they disembark. They will then have a choice of excursions including a tour of the Walled City of Derry, a trip to the world famous Giant's Causeway or a tour of the Inishowen Peninsula and Glenveagh National Park.
Londonderry Port & Harbour Commissioners harbourmaster, Bill McCann, from Shroove, said the port is delighted to offer berthing and piloting facilities to the visiting vessels.
“We welcome the opportunity to work alongside DVCB in promoting the port to cruise ships.”
The DVCB's Aoife Thomas added: “The North West region of Derry and its hinterland has huge potential as a cruise destination. The region has previously attracted up to 12 ships per year and we hope to reach this target once again.
"The cruise industry is constantly changing and operators are continually sourcing new ports to refresh their product offering. Cruise North West is an exciting project for DVCB to be involved with and it is our aim to encourage cruise operators to include our destination in their itineraries."
Meanwhile, Derry City Council marketing officer, Claire Lundy said the local authority looked forward to capitalising on the successes to date.
“Building upon the strong reputation the region has developed as a cruise destination, we look forward to the positive results the partnership will deliver."
