Hear the story of Donegal 12.05.10

THE story of Donegal as told through the words of people from all over the county including Inishowen will be launched next week.
The 'Donegal Life & Lore Collection' contains around 60 oral recordings on CD and features the reminiscences of residents throughout the county.
The CD, recorded by Maurice O'Keeffe, will be launched in the Donegal County Museum, High Road, Letterkenny, on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 by Donegal Person of the Year and Altan front woman, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh.
Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh who will launch the Donegal Life & Lore Collection on May 19. “The Donegal Heritage 'Life & Lore' Collection tells part of the story of County Donegal through the lives, and in the words, of some of its residents,” said Donegal heritage officer, Joseph Gallagher.
“The interviewees are drawn from all over the county and address various aspects of our heritage. These diverse accounts of life, heritage and culture in County Donegal make an important contribution to capturing our sense of place and will prove to be an important archive in the future.”
An archive of over 1,500 recordings have been compiled by Maurice and Jane O'Keeffe since 1990. As they are commissioned by the local authorities
of each county, they travel the highways and byways of Ireland recording the oral history there. Each recording is produced on an individual CD of approximately one-hour duration.
The Donegal collection was commissioned by the County Donegal Heritage Office, the County Donegal Heritage Forum and The Heritage Council as part of the County Donegal Heritage Plan (2007-2011). The collection can be consulted free-of-charge through the Library Service. The launch will take place next Wednesday at 1.30pm and is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served from 1pm.
