THREE Gardaí with
connections to Inishowen or Donegal have been
remembered with the unveiling of a Roll of Honour to
remember 83 members of the force who died in the
line of duty.
The memorial garden was unveiled at Dublin Castle at
the weekend by Taoiseach Brian Cowen alongside Garda
Commissioner Fachtna Murphy and Minister for Justice
Dermot Ahern.
The names of the 83 gardaí who were killed are
inscribed in stone on the Roll of Honour.
Medals were also presented to a representative from
the families of each of the gardaí.
Among those remembered are Garda Gary McLoughlin who
was killed when a car he and colleagues were
investigating, crashed into their patrol car last
December in Burt.
Garda McLoughlin was taken to Letterkenny Hospital
but died on December 14. He was only 24.
Also remembered is Garda Robert McCallion (29) who
was based in Letterkenny. Garda McCallion died last
year when he was struck by a car travelling at speed
while investigating an incident in Letterkenny on
March 26.
After being taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin
Garda McCallion died on April 7, 2009. Originally
from Mayo, Garda McCallion’s father Bob is from
Carndonagh.
Another name on the Roll of Honour is a Garda who
was killed in Sarajevo while on peacekeeping duties
on May 18 1995.
Sergeant Paul Reid, a native of Dublin, was based at
Burnfoot Garda Station. He died when his vehicle
came under fire and crashed in a notorious part of
Sarajevo known as ‘Sniper’s Alley’. |
