Farmers urged to join Burt walk 28.06.10

INISHOWEN farmers have been urged to attend one or more of the Teagasc Organic Farm Walks running from June – September.
The only walk to be held in Co Donegal will take place this Thursday, July 1, 2010 at 2pm at Inch Level, Speenogue, Burt. The walk will be facilitated by Ian Witherow of Donegal Creameries.
Minister for State at the Department of Agriculture, Ciaran Cuffe said the walks were a great way for farmers to explore organic production.
Speaking after his recent attendance at the Sustainable Foods Summit in Amsterdam, the minister said:
"The prominence given to sustainable food production and level of interest expressed by international multiples and retailers in organic farming highlights the fact that organic production has a bright future on the global market.
"It was clearly recognised by the wide spectrum of interested parties present, that organic production and organic farming have the potential to play a strategic role in the move to sustainable production and consumption."
Minister Cuffe said the Teagasc Farm Walks offer farmers the chance to learn, first hand, about the practicalities of organic farming.
“Having the opportunity to discuss all related topics with the host farmer, Teagasc experts, department officials and representatives from organic certification bodies, is a chance not to be missed. This year, Teagasc have incorporated specific themes into such farm walks, such as composting and clover, which will be of benefit not only to farmers considering the organic option for the first time but also to existing organic farmers. I would encourage more farmers to attend the remaining upcoming organic farm walks."
