Progress on Buncrana school campus 20.02.09

by Simon McGeady, Inishowen Independent

THE chances of Buncrana getting a new purpose built education campus moved a step closer on Monday when it was announced that the Donegal VEC have made the project their number one priority in terms of future schools to be built.
A number of potential sites have been identified for the campus, which would include a Crana College, Gael Collaiste Cineal Eoghan and possibly the town’s Irish language pre-school, have been identified.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent on Monday following the monthly VEC meeting, Inishowen Fianna Fáil County Councillor Rena Donaghy said she would be pressing VEC CEO Sean O’Longain to urge the Department of Education to select a site for the new schools as soon as possible.
’The Cockhill based councillor said the recent announcement of funding for a school for the Finn Valley means that a new school complex for Buncrana had ‘moved to the front of the queue’ for future funding.
“This is great news for Inishowen. Donegal County Council planners have looked at a number of sites in the Buncrana area. At Monday’s meeting I urged the VEC CEO to ask the department of Education to come and identify a site for the Buncrana school so that we in Inishowen can put pressure on the

government to grant us the funding we need.”
Cllr Donaghey went on to stress that with their recent announcement of funding for new schools the Government had answered their critics.
“Just as it seems everyone has a doom and gloom mindset, it is important to note that his government are in fact keeping Education very much to the forefront. Since the start of the month 43 major new school building projects nationwide have been granted funding, a record 650 million euro will be invested in these 43 projects.”
