TV personality to present Carn certs 24.09.09

by Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent

EUROVISION winner and TV personality Linda Martin will be in Carndonagh next Wednesday night to present local people with certificates for completing adult education courses, and one of the participants, Carn mother of three Pauline Dixon, has spoken about the benefit she and her colleagues got from the course.
“It was a great course and I enjoyed it thoroughly,” said Pauline, who left formal education after completing her Leaving Certificate a dozen years ago. “It was daunting to go back into a classroom at first, but we had a great bunch of students and it was fine once we got back into the swing of it.”
Subjects covered by the group included mathematics, English, arts, consumer awareness, parenting, food and cookery, and health-related fitness. It helped the participants get back into studying mode and has even allowed Pauline to feel more confident in helping her daughters with their own homework. The project, which is called Learning for Living, ran from January 2008 and involved the Inishowen Development Partnership, the Donegal Vocational Educational Committee and local schools. The course is accredited by FETAC and organisers included Mary McGeehan from the IDP, Joyce Burns from the VEC and home-school liaison officers Elaine Meehan and Delilah Cuddy from Carndonagh Community School St Patrick’s Girl’s NS respectively.
“I particularly enjoyed the food and cookery and health-related fitness modules,” Pauline said, adding that she has this month taken up a place on a cookery course at the North West Regional College in Derry.
“If it wasn’t for taking the course in Carn, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to go on to the Tech. It gave me a great boost, and re-introduced me to learning after being away from it for many years.”
“I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to get back into education,” Pauline said. “It’s not like your old days in school. Everyone wants to be there, the classes are enjoyable, and the attitude is top class.”
