Céilí Dancers off to World Championships

A GROUP of Inishowen dancers from the McConomy School are to travel to the United States in April to take part in the World Irish Dancing Championships.
Three of the dancers attained medals at the World Championships in Belfast last March and qualified for the World Championships in Philadelphia.
The remainder of the group qualified at the Ulster Championships held in Derry last November.
They include Nadine Doherty, Emma McLaughlin, Nicole O'Connor and Rachael McGinley (Buncrana); Emma McGonigle (Quigley's Point); Arlene McDermott (Carndonagh); Michelle Bradley (Fahan); Roisin Carlin (Tooban) and brothers Gerard and David McNamee (Killea).
Fundraising for the Philly trip is ongoing. The school would like to thank everyone involved in support given to the very successful Big Night Out, at the Laurentic Bar recently.
“This year the McConomy School have twenty-eight qualifiers for the World Championships. In recent years we have attained thirteen world titles and hopefully will be adding to this in April. This success is due to the hard work and commitment of the teachers, pupils and parents all working together. The All Ireland Championships will be held in Killarney in February and as this is a second qualifier for Irish children, it is hoped we will have some more qualifiers to represent us,” said a spokesperson.
“Inishowen pupils of the school have won many titles in recent years which include World,
Gerard McNamee
All Ireland, Ulster, Ireland Northwest, American and Scotland titles and hopefully this success will continue in the future. The dancers have always been proud to represent their towns and Inishowen.
“The school are currently fundraising for the World Championships in Philadelphia. Financial help of any kind would be greatly appreciated. Anyone who feels they can help can contact any of the parents of the school or any of the teachers at class, which is held in the Buncrana Leisure Centre every Thursday,” she said.
