Crimes against elderly under spotlight 18.09.09

NEXT week is Garda Community Safety Week throughout the peninsula and this year the theme is 'Older People in the Community’.
The purpose is to focus on the positive contribution of older people in society and in particular their involvement in community partnerships and crime prevention initiatives operated in conjunction with An Garda Síochána.
"While at the same time recognising that older people can be targeted by certain types of criminals, the impact of this can be reduced if crime prevention advice is taken on board," said a Garda spokesperson.
The campaign will be supported by a number of activities including high visibility initiatives involving Garda traffic units, Garda crime prevention officers and the new Garda Mobile Incident Command Units. Gardai will also hope to foster and sustain positive Garda-Community partnerships with older people, school children and intercultural groups. Crime prevention and community safety advice leaflets will be distributed to the public through public libraries and the Garda website.
Meanwhile, there will also be local radio broadcasts, Community Alert and Neighbourhood Watch meetings taking place.
