Half Marathon boost for Foyle Hospice 21.08.09

INISHOWEN athletes, fun runners, joggers and walkers are being urged to take part in the upcoming Tesco Waterside Half Marathon on Saturday, September 12.
The marathon will this year be held in aid of the Foyle Hospice and the NSPCC.
Derry Chamber of Commerce president, Jim Sammon said the marathon was a "superb event for all ages and levels of fitness".
"I would encourage businesses and workplaces across the Derry City Council area and beyond to get their work colleagues together for a three person relay team. Not only is it good fun but you can help raise money for local charities," he said.
Mayor Cllr Paul Fleming pictured with Derry Chamber of Commerce president, Jim Sammon, local athlete, Jacqueline McMonagle, Sinead McLaughlin, Chamber of Commerce and Harry Smyth, Tesco Lisnagelvin manager, encouraging relay teams across the city and region to sign up for the Waterside Half Marathon. The event boasts a generous £5,000 plus prize fund covering age categories from under 20 to over 70. The event is one of the highlights of Derry's sporting calendar and attracts between 700 and 1,000 participants.
Race organiser Gerry Lynch of Derry City Council said he was confident this year's event would be bigger than before. "The Half Marathon and Fun Run is a great family day out and is an important sports event for the city and region. It offers an accessible challenge for everyone, with training during the summer months, and is ideally timed for all those contemplating an autumn marathon.
To date we have had a record number of entries and are hopeful that this will be out biggest yet" he said.
Entry forms and more details are available from www.derrycity.gov.uk/halfmarathon or contact Maureen Allen at e-mail: halfmarathon@derrycity.gov.uk or 04871347695.
