Local band gets gig at Los Angeles gala 17.09.09

INISHOWEN musical trio The Henry Girls are to perform at the opening night of the Los Angeles Irish Film Festival next week at which Hollywood heart-throb Aidan Quinn will be guest of honour. Quinn stars in new release 'A Shine of Rainbows' which was shot in the peninsula last year and features The Henry Girls on the soundtrack.
The band - aka Lorna, Joleen and Karen McLaughlin - collaborated with LA composer Keith Power for the soundtrack of the film which premiered in Toronto earlier this month. They will get the chance to catch up again with Quinn when they play at the Irish Film Board reception.
The Henry Girls “We are very excited to be performing on the opening night of the second LA Irish Film Festival,” says Lorna McLaughlin. “We were invited by LAIFF director Lisa McLaughlin earlier this year and were fortunate enough to secure the funds to travel from Donegal County Council and Culture Ireland, the state agency promoting Irish arts worldwide.”
She described the gig as "a massive opportunity" for the trio, whose musical style is described as an eclectic mix of folk, blues and roots music, with spine-tingling three-part vocal harmonies.
“This festival will enable us to be part of a celebration that is
showcasing the best of Irish culture, film and music and give us the opportunity to perform new songs and old favourites in one of the most exciting cities in the world. It will also give us a chance to catch up with some of the people we worked with on 'A Shine of Rainbows',” added Lorna.
While in LA, the girls will also play at the festival’s closing event on September 27 and at other key festival events. The LA trip is one of the highlights of what has already been a very successful year for the three musicians and singers, who are from Malin. In addition to their work on the Quinn film, they performed and toured with contemporary dance company Echo Echo Dance for a production called The Ripple Effect and they have just finished recording their third album, which will be launched later this year. When they return from LA, they have a busy month ahead with appearances due at the Donegal Bay and Bluestacks Festival, the Charles Macklin Festival in Inishowen and the North Coast Folk Festival in Portstewart.
