From one radio station to another... 12.03.09

INISHOWEN Community Radio (ICRfm) has looked to an altogether different local radio station for its latest documentary. ICRfm has produced a 45-minute show about Malin Head Coast Guard Radio Station in celebration and recognition of the valuable services the rescue co-ordination centre provides every day of the year.
Malin Head Coast Guard Radio Station is the oldest radio station in Britain and Ireland having first opened its doors on January 1, 1902.
Claire McDermott on ICRfm "Since then it has never shut down for one day, one hour or even one minute. Malin Head Coast Guard Radio Station has been receiving and sending the transmissions of seafarers through the Irish War of Independence, two World Wars, the setting up of the Irish Free State and the formation of the Irish Republic," said documentary producer Claire McDermott. The documentary also explores how teamwork between the RNLI, the Coast Guard helicopter rescue team, fishermen and the radio officers in the station is fundamental to ensure the safety of people at sea. It also conveys how the rescue services on both sides of the border must work in partnership to keep people
safe in the waters around the island of Ireland.
The show, funded by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland's Sound and Vision Scheme, will be broadcast on ICRfm on March 17, at 12pm on the frequency 105 and 107.6fm or online at www.icrfm.ie
For more information about the documentary, please contact Claire at the station on 074 93 29105.
