Harkin forfeits €3,500-a-month pension 02.03.09

NORTH and West MEP Marian Harkin has forfeited her combined teacher and Dáil pension in solidarity with people losing their jobs and those incurring the pension levy.
The Independent MEP decided to forego her double pension entitlement of €3,500 per month in recognition of the State's current financial crisis.
The cut will became effective on March 1 to coincide with the implementation of the pension levy. "I am well paid while I am a member of the European Parliament but foregoing this additional income is not an easy decision," said Ms Harkin.
"Having regard to the costs that will be incurred in the upcoming European Parliament election," said Ms Harkin. “However as a politician who is calling for efficiency in Government and, at the same time, opposing health cuts and urging investment in my constituency,
North and West MEP Marian Harkin
I believe it is incumbent upon me to make this decision."
