A SECOND half goal blitz saw the senior girls from Moville Community College easily shake off the challenge of St. Columba’s College on Friday morning in a game played in horrendous conditions. Although the pitch at Bonagee was excellent, a howling gale and lashing rain made it extremely difficult for either side to get the ball down and play good football, but it was clear from the earliest stages that Moville would adapt much better than their Stranorlar rivals.
With midfielder Shonagh Kelly in excellent form and pulling the strings in midfield, the Moville girls twice created good chances in the opening five minutes which might have seen them break the deadlock.
Thirty seconds had barely gone by when St. Columba’s struggled to get the ball out from defence and Karen Henry had a good chance but fired wide of the post. Then with just five minutes on the clock, Kelly’s excellent pass split the Columba’s defence to allow Loirin Melarkey through, but goalkeeper Sharon McGlynn was quickly off her line to smother her effort.
Kelly then raced through in the 13th minute but once again McGlynn who was brilliant for St. Columba’s in the early stages, was out quickly to make a brave smothering save.
The Stranorlar girls were finding the going tough although defenders Kelly McGirr and Aoife McLaughlin and midfielders Tanya Kennedy and Lauren Guthrie were
doing their best to hold back the wave after wave of Moville attacks.
However their resistance was finally broken in the 24th minute when a corner from the right by Kelly slipped through McGlynn’s grasp and Karen Henry nipped in at the back post to tap in from close range.
St. Columba’s might have levelled things up in the 33rd minute when a through ball found Patricia McGowan but she saw her effort well saved by Moville keeper Evelyn Dougal.
The second half started much as the first with Moville pressing on and causing havoc in the St. Columba’s defence. Stacey Cavanagh saw her effort come off the post in the 37th minute, but eventually Moville added to their tally when Henry was again on hand to hammer home from a corner in the 41st minute.
When midfielder Tara Martin was red carded for a challenge on Moville’s Shonagh Kelly that saw the Moville girl stretchered off the pitch, there was never going to be a way back for St. Columba’s.
From the free-kick that followed, Ciara Hegarty saw her effort saved but not held by McGlynn and Aisling Newton following in tapped the ball home.
Newtown made it 4-0 to Moville in the 56th minute when she hammered a shot low into the bottom corner while Ciara Hegarty saw her shot well saved in the 62nd minute by Tanya Kennedy who had taken over the goalkeeping duties for St. Columba’s.
Moville sub Orlaith Furlong twice came close in the 65th minutes with well struck shots before Ciara Hegarty
wrapped it all up for Moville in the 67th minute with a fantastic solo goal that saw her shake off a couple of tackles before firing the ball into the bottom corner.
