Greenlight given for runway extension 17.07.07

DERRY City Council has been given the greenlight for a compulsory purchase order for land to extend the runway at the city's airport.
The approval was signed by Northern Ireland Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy.
Derry City Airport. The CPO which includes homes, agricultural and other buildings, follows recommendations of an independent public inquiry claiming the runway safety scheme was essential for the safe management of the airport and was in the public interest.
Mr. Murphy, the Sinn Féin MLA for
Newry and Armagh, said he recognised the distress of people asked to give up their homes and properties. However, he said he was satisfied the lands were needed for the safe use of the runway.
There were a total of 17 objections to the council's application for vesting and these were considered at a public inquiry in April.
The Regional Development Minister said he hoped the council would deal sensitively with the owners in taking possession of their land and said the council should continue its efforts to assist the relocation of those concerned.
