A CARNDONAGH primary
school will be closed until Wednesday due to a
weekend vandalism attack costing thousands in
damage.
St. Patrick's Boys' School was targeted in the early
hours of Sunday as vandals went on the rampage
throughout the roadside school.
They ripped guttering and drain pipes from the walls
and then used these to smash around 16 windows
around the building.
Six classrooms, a general purpose room and a
corridor were extensively damaged with the overall
cost estimated to run into thousands of euro.
The attack will leave the school closed until
Wednesday as teachers and volunteers help clean up
the mess and make the classrooms safe for the
children to return. Monday was scheduled as a
teachers' inhouse training day, but staff had to be
accommodated at Carndonagh girls' school due to the
attack.
School principal Albert Doherty told
InishowenNews.com it was an "attack on the entire
community". "It was so disappointing to see so many
classrooms in disarray with glass all over the
floors, the desks and the library areas," he said.
"Our school has suffered a significant amount of
criminal damage that will run into thousands of
euro." He urged anyone with information to tell the
Gardai.
"I would appeal to people to come forward with any
information because the people who made an attack on
this school are making an attack on our entire
