Bid to protect 1876 Buncrana building 10.07.07

BUNCRANA Town Council is being urged to place the 131 year old Church of Ireland Parish Hall on its list of protected buildings.
The request was made by the secretary of Christ Church in Dublin on behalf of the Church of Ireland.
Councillors are expected to debate the proposal at next week's monthly meeting following a recommendation from the conservation section of Donegal County Council.
Church of Ireland, Buncrana. An assessment by conservationists established that the detached single-storey former school at Church Street, Buncrana, had "architectural, historical, cultural and social interest". As such, they said, it should be added to the record of protected structures.
Rev. Sam Barton yesterday told InishowenNews.com he was delighted with the recommendation.
"We recently received a heritage grant that allowed us to reroof the building and repair the pinnacle. If the building was placed on the list of protected structures, more funding would be made available to allow us carry out some internal refurbishment works including a damp proof course. It has suffered from severe dampness over the years not least because one end of the building faces the sea," said Rev. Barton. The hall is still used by the local community for events including the Inishowen Country Market.
